According to Federal Regulations CFR49, Part 391.23, (a) (1) (2) (c), it is required a Motor Carrier investigate a candidate employee/driver, drivers license record, for the past three (3) years. Inquiries of his/her employment history by contacting former employers for general character references, drug and alcohol use and/or abuse.  These references checks MUST be properly documented and completed within 30 days of hiring the candidate driver.

It makes little sense to allow an individual that has not been properly evaluated to operate eighty thousand pounds (80,000 lbs.) or upwards of one hundred thousand dollars ($100,000) worth of your equipment, without some type of background investigation of his/her employment, criminal and driving history.
